Kidnapped businessman recounts his ordeal

Manolis Karamolegos, the owner of a major baked goods firm, who was kidnapped on Tuesday but managed to convince one of his abductors to release him less than 24 hours later, told reporters on Friday that his “faith” had helped him survive his ordeal.

The businessman — who told journalists that he is aged 55, not 66 as had been widely reported — said he could not give details about the kidnapping, nor about how he managed to convince the Moldovan national leading the gang of abductors to release him, and turn himself in, as a police investigation is still underway.

A second kidnapper was arrested on Wednesday evening while another two were being sought by police.

In comments to reporters outside his factory in Koropi, eastern Attica, Karamolegos said he tried to be calm and show respect to his abductors. He rebuffed reports that any of them had worked for him in the past or had any links to his bakery business.
