Panionios gets the better of PAOK as Reds march on
PAOK suffered another loss in Athens, this time 2-0 at Panionios on Saturday, to allow Olympiakos to open its gap at the top to 11 points following the its 2-0 win over Levadiakos at home.
The Reds played a mediocre first half that ended goalless, but in the second half, when coach Michel introduced Michael Olaitan instead of Costas Mitroglou, the picture of the game at the Karaiskakis Stadium changed, with Olaitan and Jose Holebas scoring for the champions. Levadiakos ended the game with 10 men due to the second bookable offence by Vangelis Mantzios.
Panionios played a clever game against PAOK at Nea Smyrni and scored through Christos Aravidis and Andreas Laznik, helping its fans forget the major financial problems Greece’s oldest club has been facing.
Atromitos stayed third, eight points behind PAOK, after its goalless draw at bottom club Aris on Sunday, but is now only one point ahead of Panathinaikos who enjoyed a convincing 3-1 win at Veria. The Greens had Victor Klonaridis, Abdul Ajagun and Marcus Berg to thank for this comfortable win.
One point behind Panathinaikos is Asteras Tripolis, that put an end to the great run by Apollon with a 2-1 win in Athens on Sunday, while Panetolikos climbed to sixth joining Panthrakikos after beating it 3-1.
Kalloni Lesvou triumphed 2-1 at Giannina after coming from behind to beat local PAS and rise to joint eighth along with Xanthi, that snatched a last-minute equalizer (2-2) at Ergotelis.
On Monday Platanias hosts OFI in the Cretan derby at Hania.
