40-year-old woman dies in Athens apartment fire

Firemen called to put out a blaze at an apartment in the Athens suburb of Aghios Dimitrios shortly after 7 a.m. on Tuesday found the house’s 40-year-old resident dead in her bedroom, according to reports.

The woman’s body was found near the door to the bedroom balcony, leading investigators to believe that she was trying to get outside and call for help when she passed out from smoke inhalation.

An investigation is being carried out to determine what caused the blaze, which was contained in scope, though preliminary reports suggest it may have been sparked by a cigarette lit by the victim who subsequently fell asleep as the mattress on her bed was completely charred.
