A third of Greeks throw away food, study finds

Despite the impact of the economic crisis on household budgets, one in three Greeks admits to throwing away biodegradable food such as fruit, vegetables and dairy products at least once or twice a month, according to a new survey carried out by Public Issue for the WWF Hellas conservation group.

The same survey found that 9 percent of Greeks throw food away twice or three times a week and that consumers aged 18 to 34 disposed of larger amounts of food than those aged over 55. Greeks appear to be less wasteful than their European counterparts however.

According to Barilla, the pasta manufacturer, each Greek wastes around 44 kilos of food per year, compared to 334 kilograms per year for Cypriots. The European average is estimated at 179 kilos per year.
