City of Athens increases online services, gives citizens more oversight

Athenians will soon be able to lodge a complaint with municipal authorities or pay a parking fine electronically.

In a press conference Wednesday, Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis unveiled plans for an online service for citizens that will give users access to about 80 municipal facilities. Using a computer or smart phone, citizens will be able to view data on the municipal budget, find out how to get a license for a bar or restaurant and notify authorities of problems such as broken street lamps.

Kaminis said the online service will give citizens more oversight regarding City Hall’s activities without having to visit any municipal offices. “Online governance is genuinely political and profoundly democratic,” he said, adding that the project was developed “without spending a single euro.”
