Lively bourse session ends losing streak

Wednesday’s bourse session at Athinon Avenue had the traders on their toes, investors on the edge of their seats and market observers glued to their screens as it started with gains, continued with losses and ended with the benchmark index posting a moderate rise and with losers outnumbering the gainers.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,222.88 points, inching up 0.62 percent from Tuesday’s 1,215.34 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 expanded by 0.76 percent to 404.15 points.

When the main index slipped below the 1,200-point level, buyers of non-banking stocks swung into action and powered the market higher, putting an end to the four-day losing streak. That, however, takes nothing away from the bearish mood that continues to dominate the market.

Jumbo outperformed with a 4.35 percent increase, followed by Mytilineos (up 2.75 percent) and OTE telecom (2.66 percent). Folli Follie fell 2.82 percent and Piraeus Port Authority shrank by 2.78 percent.

In total 62 stocks registered gains, 73 suffered losses and 19 remained unchanged.

Turnover reached 93.8 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 109.4 million.
