Albanian fugitive caught and due for extradition to Greece
Albanian police on Saturday arrested Ilir Kupa, one of 11 Albanian convicts who escaped from Trikala Prison in northwestern Greece in March last year.
The 27-year-old had been named by Greek authorities as being one of four men involved in the death of a female motorist and a police officer in shootouts following the escape. Police have also identified Kupa as one of the men who shot at police officers after being pulled over for questioning in Mandra, northwest of Athens, last April.
A European warrant had been issued for the 27-year-old’s arrest after Greek police notified Albanian authorities that Kupa might have succeeded in crossing the border. An extradition order for his return to Greece was issued on Saturday.
