Two agricultural co-ops being probed over use of EU funds

As part of a nationwide investigation into the suspected misappropriation of European Union subsidies, officers of the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) have traced two agricultural cooperatives in Epirus, northern Greece, believed to have pocketed 3.8 million euros in EU money.

The cooperatives secured two subsidies, one worth 2.6 million euros and the other 1.2 million euros, for the purpose of building refrigeration units for their produce, Skai understands. But, according to SDOE’s investigation, it appears that the bulk of the money went into the pockets of unidentified individuals following the falsification of invoices and the overpricing of contracts.
