Buzzer beaters dominate basketball weekend

Olympiakos survived yet another scare at home in the league to beat bottom club Ilisiakos on Monday, after a weekend dominated by the last-shot victories by Panionios and Nea Kifissia away from home.

Olympiakos beat combative Ilisiakos 83-73, on Jamario Moon’s successful debut with 15 points, although the Zografou club had led 34-19 at some point in the second period. The Reds remained one point behind second-placed Panionios.

Leader Panathinaikos produced its 14th consecutive league victory beating Panelefsiniakos 76-54, after leading 22-0 in the first eight minutes of the game at Elefsina on Sunday.

On Saturday Panionios needed overtime to defeat host Trikala 84-83 courtesy of a Marc Antonio Carter winner.

Yet the ultimate buzzer beater came from Dimitris Tsaldaris of Nea Kifissia, with a three-pointer from the other end of the court that saw his promoted club beat KAO Dramas 77-76, also in overtime, to climb to the fifth spot. KAOD protested that the shot was made after the buzzer.

The Thessaloniki derby between PAOK and Aris was dominated by the 45-minute stop forced by a banger hurled by a PAOK fan, that led to the emptying of the stands. Eventually PAOK won 56-49, but Thessaloniki basketball suffered another blow.

In other weekend games, AGO Rethymnou beat Kolossos Rhodes 86-67 and Apollon Patras saw off Ikaros Halkidas 71-65.
