Former Korydallos Prison director faces disciplinary charges over Xeros escape
The former director of the Greek capital’s Korydallos Prison was ordered by Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou on Tuesday to face a disciplinary council over the escape of convicted terrorist Christodoulos Xeros in early January, who absconded while on leave from the prison, where he is serving multiple life sentences for murder and other acts of terrorism committed while he was a member of November 17.
Former Korydallos Prison director Maria Stefi will have to explain why Xeros was afforded lenient treatment by prison authorities, such as being allowed frequent visits to other inmates convicted of terrorist acts and being granted multiple furloughs.
On Monday, Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani ordered that the two prosecutors who sat on the council that granted Xeros leave should also face disciplinary action.
The two prosecutors face temporary suspension from their duties, as do 17 employees of Korydallos who are under scrutiny as part of a broader probe into the treatment received by Xeros while he was at the prison.
The 55-year-old convict appeared in a video posted online last week pledging a return to terrorism.
