New debts of 9.2 bln owed to state in 2013 as checks missed targets
New debts to the state amounting to 9.2 billion euros were created in 2013, reaching a total of 62.2 billion, according to figures released by the Finance Ministry.
Last year, just 3.2 billion euros of arrears were collected, the ministry added.
This was partly down to fewer checks than those planned being carried out. A total of 561 preliminary inspections were carried out against a target of 680. As for full checks, the aim had been to complete 596 but only 324 were completed.
More than 9,900 value-added inspections were carried out against a target of 11,000. Authorities checked 454 wealthy taxpayers when the goal had been to inspect 910.
There had also been an intention to conduct checks on 110 high-ranking officials in the tax administration but only 54 were done.
The General Secretariat for Information Systems, however, beat the target for notices sent to taxpayers who owe money. It issued more than 786,000 notifications against a target of 250,000.
