Rachel Weisz, Colin Farrell to star in new Yorgos Lanthimos film

A first English language film by an Oscar-nominated Greek director is getting some A-list Hollywood star power. Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell have just been added to the roster of actors scheduled to star in “The Lobster”, a new film by Yorgos Lanthimos, US industry daily Variety reports.

A representative of the so-called “weird wave of Greek cinema,” Lanthimos was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language category for “Dogtooth” in 2011. Two years later the director and his longtime collaborator Efthimis Filippou were awarded the Best Screenplay award at the 68 Venice Film Festival for “Alps.”

“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such great actors. Their contribution to our film will enrich and expand the world we are trying to create and explore,” Lanthimos said. “Furthermore our team of old and new collaborators makes me very confident and excited to start making this film.”

Dubbed as an unconventional love story set in the future, “The Lobster” follows life in a community in which singles are forced to find a mate within a 45-day-period or face expulsion and a solitary existence.

Besides Weisz (who won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for “The Constant Gardener”) and Farrell (Golden Globe winner for “In Bruges”), the cast also includes Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, Olivia Colman, Ariane Labed and Aggeliki Papoulia.

According to Variety the film is scheduled to start shooting in Ireland on March 24.
