School guards, municipal police officers face dismissal

School guards and municipal police officers who have been placed in a civil service mobility scheme on reduced pay as their status is assessed since June will form the pool from which the government will fulfill the quota of 4,000 state dismissals for 2013, Kathimerini has learned.

March 23 will mark the end of the eight-month mobility period for school guards and officers of the municipal police, a service that was disbanded last year as part of Greece's civil sector overhaul in line with demands from its international creditors.

Of the 2,000 school guards placed in the scheme in June, some 1,700 will be let go, according to Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who said that just 330 will be rehired in the health sector. Another 300 former municipal police officers from the 2,800-strong force will also be let go with the remainder being reassigned to other sectors, mainly to the Greek Police.

According to ministry sources the remaining 11,000 employees the state needs to let go by the end of this year in order to fulfill the terms of its bailout agreement will come from the abolition and merger of defunct or under-performing state agencies.
