Climate change in Green party turns off MEP

The first member of Greece’s Ecologist Greens to be elected to European Parliament, Nikos Chrysogelos, said on Tuesday that he would not be standing in May’s elections for the party, which appears to be on the verge of a significant split.

Chrysogelos attributed his decision to quit to the fact that the party had “become trapped in a cycle of introspection due to a minority… overturning the decisions of the majority of members regarding opening up to society.”

The MEP, who was elected after the party received 3.5 percent of the vote in the 2009 European Parliament elections, said he had no plans to join a party from “other political areas.”

Another party member, Eleanna Ioannidou, also refused to stand as a candidate in May, citing similar reasons to Chrysogelos.
