Man arrested for murder of two DIAS policemen in Rendi

Police in Menidi, western Attica, arrested early on Wednesday a 25-year-old man in connection to the murder of two DIAS motorcycle-riding squad officers in March 2011 in the district of Rendi, southern Athens.

Giorgos Emertzidis, 25, had been convicted for his involvement in the double homicide and was being sought by police.

Prior to the Rendi incident Emertzidis had been charged with robbing a kiosk in Menidi. Following his acquittal in the robbery case Korydallos Prison officials had released him from prison in 2012.

Police sources said on Thursday that the suspect told police officers he had been hiding in the countryside.

The victims, Giorgos Skyloyiannis, 22 and Yiannis Evangelinelis, 23, died after four men opened fire on eight DIAS officers who were pursuing them. Another two officers were injured in the attack.
