Cyprus president sees ‘serious prospects’ for resumption of peace talks

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said on Thursday that he saw “serious prospects” for the resumption of long-stalled negotiations between Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot community leaders based on a joint communique setting out the principles for the eventual reunification of the divided island.

“It appears there are serious prospects for a substantive joint statement which would satisfy the basic principles governing a Cyprus settlement, and lead to a resumption of negotiations,” Anastasiades told journalists in Nicosia after briefing Greek-Cypriot party leaders.

The Cypriot president, who is due to meet Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Athens on Friday, added that talks were at a “delicate point.”
