Civil servants protest mobility scheme as court mulls appeals

Members of the local authority employees union POE-OTA and of the secondary school teachers' union OLME on Friday staged a protest outside the Council of State, the country's highest administrative court, where judicial officials were discussing appeals by workers against a troika-imposed decision to place them in a so-called mobility scheme of forced transfers and layoffs.

Minor scuffles broke out in the late morning between protesters who threw plastic bottles of water at riot police officers who fired tear gas to disperse the angry crowd.

Teachers were on strike on Friday in protest at the mobility scheme which is one of several structural reforms Greece has pledged to its foreign creditors in exchange for continued rescue funding but has delayed implementation.

Several recent court rulings have found that troika-imposed cuts to the salaries and pensions of several groups of civil servants are illegal.
