Aftershocks continue to shake quake-struck Cephalonia

Aftershocks continued to shake Cephalonia on Friday with a 4.1-Richter tremor hitting the Ionian island in the early hours of the morning.

The island’s buildings and infrastructure have suffered serious damage due to strong earthquakes over the past two weeks.

Apart from providing shelter for islanders who have been left homeless due to the quakes, authorities have been scrambling to repair widespread damage in a bid to ensure that the island is operational ahead of the tourist season. The island is one of the most popular in the Ionian for foreign visitors.

In a related development on Friday, an undersea quake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit the Gulf of Patra in western Greece at 3.20 a.m. but no damage or injuries were reported.
