SYRIZA’s regional committee backs controversial candidate

The political secretariat of leftist SYRIZA is on Friday to discuss the case of the journalist Theodoros Karypidis, who was expected run for the post of Western Macedonia’s regional governor on SYRIZA’s ticket in the May elections until recent comments of his were interpreted as anti-Semitic and fueled controversy.

The secretariat was widely expected to seek to dissociate the party from the journalist.

But late on Thursday members of leftist SYRIZA’s regional organization for Western Macedonia voted, by 9-3, in favor of SYRIZA continuing to support Karypidis as a candidate in the forthcoming elections.

The controversy was triggered by Karypidis’s posts on his Facebook page that were interpreted as anti-Semitic and supportive of Greece’s neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn.
