Greek minister says recent road toll rises were part of existing deals

Transport Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis on Friday defended the rise in tolls on some sections of Greek highways, which mean that it now costs 56 euros to travel between Athens and Thessaloniki.

Chrysochoidis said that the recent round of increases were written into the agreements with private firms that saw the highway sections open to the public in 2007.

As of Thursday motorists faced higher charges at the Pelasgia tollgates in Fthiotida – 3.50 euros instead of 2.70 euros – and at the Moschohori toll station in Pieria – 4 euros instead of 3.10 euros.

Toll charges at the Elefsina and Corinth Canal tollgates increased on Tuesday.
