Nine arrests, including Oropos mayor, over toll charge protest
Nine people, including Oropos Mayor Yiannis Oikonomakos, have been arrested in connection with a protest against toll hikes northeast of Athens.
The arrests were made on Monday, hours after some 500 protesters gathered at the Malakasa toll post. They were protesting increases of up to 60 percent in toll charges.
During the demonstration one toll booth was tipped over and set on fire. Nobody was inside.
“There are all kinds of reaction from people from the moment we had the first rises,” Oikonomakos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. “The situation was already unfair because we paid huge amounts for small distances. We have eight toll stations in our municipality.”
