Lesvos radio station owner found guilty of blackmail

An appeals court on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos has given the owner of a local radio station a suspended sentence of six years and eight months after finding him guilty of extortion and defamation.

The businessman, identified in media reports as Yiannis Papoukas, had been arrested in September 2006 after receiving 10,000 euros in marked banknotes from Stratis Gomos, a businessman and local New Democracy official.

Gomos told the police that Papoukas had asked for the money in order to stop personal attacks during radio broadcasts against him and his wife, who was at the time prefectural adviser.
