Seismic activity in Cephalonia ‘smooth,’ as secondary inspections begin

Post-seismic activity in Cephalonia is proceeding “smoothly” after two large earthquakes measuring just under 6 on the Richter scale rocked the Ionian island on January 26 and February 3, a seismologist with the Athens-based Geodynamic Institute said on Tuesday.

Gerasimos Houliaras told the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency that despite hundreds of aftershocks, many measuring above 4 Richter, the post-seismic activity on the island is considered normal.

“So far, the post-seismic activity is proceeding smoothly,” Houliaras told the AMNA. “The size and number of aftershocks is also coming down. This is shown by the network of instruments we have installed on the island. We hope the situation will continue like this.”

Meanwhile, state engineers began their second round of inspections on 1,400 buildings that suffered damage and have been deemed uninhabitable. The process is expected to be completed within a week so that residents too afraid to return to their homes can gradually begin to do so.
