Independent Greeks picks Athens Mayor candidate
As the battle for the upcoming local election intensified, Independent Greeks picked MP Vassilis Kapernaros as the party choice for Athens Mayor. The decision was reached by the anti-bailout party’s parliamentary group.
In the meantime, independent deputies Vyron Polydoras and Costas Zois, who launched a new political party, Union for the Homeland and the People, last week, reportedly invited Alexia Evert, daughter of late Miltiadis Evert, to accept the Athens ticket.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, conservative New Democracy observed one of its lawmakers, former Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis, announcing his candidacy for the capital’s top job, as the conservative party named another of its deputies, former education minister Aris Spiliotopoulos, as its preferred candidate for Athens.
