Cypriot electricity unions halt strike following assurances
Cypriots woke up to rolling power cuts on Friday as hundreds of state utility workers went on strike in protest against the privatization of telecoms, electricity and ports, authorities said.
But four hours into a 12-hour strike that started at 7 a.m. electricity unions restored uninterrupted power to the island after assurances they would have a say in the privatization bill to be discussed in parliament next week.
The decision came after center-right DIKO party chief Nicolas Papadopoulos, the junior partner in the governing coalition, appealed to the unions to restore power, pledging their views would be taken on board.
