Greece gets an easy ride toward Euro 2016 finals

The national soccer team has had a particularly smooth draw for the qualifying round of Euro 2016 as it will face teams ranked far lower than Greece in the FIFA ranking.

The draw that took place on Sunday afternoon has pitted Greece with Hungary, Romania, Finland, Northern Ireland and the Faroe Islands.

“Not so good, not so bad,” was the comment on the draw by Greece manager Fernando Santos. “All teams are dangerous,” he also said striking a diplomatic tone. He is yet to answer to the federation’s offer for an extension to his contract beyond the World Cup finals this summer.

The top two of each group and the best third-placed team advance directly to the finals to be held in France, while the other third-placed teams from the nine groups will face a play-off.

As of the next European Championship the finals will consist of 24 teams.

The first round of games will be on September 7-9, 2014.
