Mayor sues SYRIZA over gold mine statement, demands 240,000 euros
The mayor of Artistoteli village in Halkidiki, Christos Pachtas, has filed a suit against SYRIZA, accusing the party of non-material damage in connection to a statement the party issued on February 18.
Pachtas has been at the center of a dispute with residents of Ierissos concerning the Skouries gold mine. The mayor supports the project.
Pachtas is asking for 240,000 euros in compensation from SYRIZA after it issued a statement condemning his efforts to stop residents protesting against the gold mine. In the statement, the party refers to Pachtas as being “corrupt”.
SYRIZA responded by saying that the law suit is a sign of Pachtas’s “panic.” The case is due to be heard on Tuesday.
