Decision to cut civil servants' lump sum pension pay deemed unconstitutional

The Court of Audit has deemed unconstitutional a decision to cut thousands of civil servants’ lump sum pension payments.

The court found that the government’s decision to slash the payments by 22.3 percent was illegal because this concerned money the civil servants had earned by paying social security contributions. This cut came after a reduction earlier in the crisis.

Judges said the decision went against the state’s obligation to maintain equality among citizens and to provide them with social security.

The case will now be referred to Council of State.
