Ban on publication of opinion polls 15 days before elections to be lifted

A ban on the publication of opinion polls 15 days before elections is due to be lifted, according to Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis.

Speaking on local radio on Tuesday, Michelakis said the ministry was scheduled to present legislation to Parliament in the upcoming days.

It is expected that the new law will allow polls to be published until Friday evening, with elections taking place on the Sunday.

“When the ban was imposed the Internet did not have the potency it has today,” said the minister.

“On the eve of an election people claimed whatever they wanted causing confusion in people’s minds. This needs to change.”
