Greece names squad for South Korea friendly

Greece coach Fernando Santos on Friday named a 20-man squad for next Wednesday’s home friendly against South Korea in preparation for the 2014 World Cup.

The match will be played at the Karaiskaki Stadium, the home venue for Greek champion Olympiakos.

Greece will play in Group C at the World Cup in Brazil, against Colombia, Ivory Coast and Japan.

South Korea will play in Group H and take on Belgium, Algeria and Russia.

Santos named four players each from Olympiakos and PAOK. Called up for the first time was 27-year-old PAOK goalkeeper Panayiotis Glykos.

“Surely the preparation we strive in this friendly is to have some similarities with the teams we will face,» said Santos.

“In this context the match against South Korea will help us find similarities with Japan. It is a very good test and will help us against a team with a completely different style than one sees in Europe,» he added.

Greece squad:

Goalkeepers: Panayiotis Glykos (PAOK), Alexandros Tzorvas (Apollon Smyrnis)

Defenders: Vassilis Torosidis (Roma/ITA), Loukas Vyntra (Levante/ESP), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/GER), Costas Manolas, Jose Holebas (both Olympiakos), Giorgos Tzavellas (PAOK)
