One in four Greek women abused, says report

One in four Greek women has fallen victim to physical or sexual abuse at least once since the age of 15, according to the result of a study by the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) which found that, on average, 33 percent of women across the 28-member EU had suffered such abuse.

The study found that for 19 percent of the women to have suffered abuse in Greece, it was at the hands of their partner or spouse, with the EU average at 22 percent.

Rates of women reporting abuse were higher in Northern European countries such as Denmark (52 percent), Finland (47 percent), Sweden (46 percent) and the Netherlands (45 percent), according to the report, which attributed the higher percentages to the fact that help centers are more accessible in those countries.
