Proposal to bring Parliament’s police inside

The Public Order Ministry has proposed that the police who guard Parliament extend their supervision to the inside of the House following an increase in tumultuous sessions, usually involving members of neofascist Golden Dawn.

The proposal is one provision in a broader bill outlining an overhaul of the police force and security services which is to be debated by lawmakers for a second day today.

The extent of the powers of the police officers assigned to guard Parliament became an issue in spring last year when leftist SYRIZA MP Yiannis Dragasakis called for police to intervene and remove Golden Dawn lawmakers who had become particularly rowdy.
