Watchdog calls for improvements at Korydallos Prison hospital

The Greek Ombudsman has called for immediate measures to be taken to improve conditions at the hospital of Attica’s Korydallos Prison after inmates posted photographs on the Internet showing overcrowded and dirty cells at the institution.

The Ombudsman noted that it first issued a warning in 2012 about the “inappropriate and outdated infrastructure” at the prison’s hospital and about the inadequate number of doctors and nurses, noting that the conditions “put the health and rights of patients at risk.”

The watchdog said its priority was better treatment for patients with serious illnesses, including those who are HIV positive.
