Three immigrants wounded after coast guard officers fire at boat

Three undocumented immigrants were being treated in a hospital on the island of Chios on Thursday after suffering injuries when Greek coast officers opened fire on their smuggling boat off the coast of Oinousses.

According to sources, coast guard officers fired warning shots in the air when smugglers refused to stop the boat after they were spotted. When the boat continued on its course, the officers fired again, aiming at the bow.

Of the 13 migrants aboard the smuggling vessel, three were injured – two men and a woman – while a Turkish national, believed to be their smuggler, was detained.

The migrants’ injuries are not life-threatening, according to doctors.
