Taxman gets results from crackdown

Over 3.2 billion euros of taxpayer debts were collected in 2013 thanks to the General Secretariat for Public Revenues’ crackdown on major debtors.

As a report on the inspections carried out in 2013 shows, revenues received a much-needed boost thanks to extensive confiscations, property auctions and even warning e-mails sent to new debtors. Finance Ministry data showed that 786,252 such e-mails were sent to state debtors, resulting in the payment of about 250 million euros in taxes due last year, while just under 3 billion euros were collected from previous years’ debts.

The state conducted 19,000 confiscations and 25 property auctions that fetched 42 million euros. It also forwarded 1,514 tax cases to the arbitration committee, somewhat easing the pressure on administrative courts.

The inspections by the state’s monitoring mechanisms led to the issue of tax demands amounting to 1.6 billion euros, and in the next few days the ministry is anticipating the outcome of checks into some 1,900 taxpayers who have sold properties of a very high value.
