Wintry start to the week, with showers and low temperatures

Wintry weather is expected to prevail in most parts of the country for the first half of the week, as strong northerly winds push down temperatures and sweep a wet front through most parts of the country.

In the Greek capital, temperatures on Monday are expected to range between 7 and 11 degrees Celsius. Skies will be mostly cloudy, though strong showers are expected in the east and north, while snow is also forecast on Mount Parnitha at altitudes above 800 meters.

Tuesday will see a cloudy start with midday showers with skies clearing up on Wednesday.

Thessaloniki will also experience rain, as well as sleet and snow at higher altitudes, and temperatures from 5-10 degrees Celsius. Showers will continue on Tuesday, giving way to cloudy skies on Wednesday,

Further north in Macedonia and Thrace, temperatures will be lower at 0-10 Celsius, with snow expected on the mountains and sleet in parts. Strong downpours overnight will continue with sporadic showers on Tuesday.

The Ionian islands and western parts of Greece should expect showers in the early afternoon and strong downpours overnight, with temperatures ranging from 4-15 Celsius and northerly winds at speeds of 4-5 on the Beaufort scale.

Stronger winds reaching 7 and 8 Beaufort are expected in eastern parts of the country and on the islands, where daytime highs will reach 15 Celsius, feeling colder because of sporadic showers and thunderstorms.

Wet weather is expected to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures forecast to rise slightly on Wednesday before taking another dip on Thursday.
