Greek prosecutor calls for new trial in share price scandal

Deputy Supreme Court prosecutor Haralambos Vourliotis has asked for the retrial of 42 people who were cleared in December of manipulating share prices on the Athens Stock Exchange 14 years ago.

Vourliotis said that he has found flaws in the judgment.

If the Supreme Court concurs with this assessment, a new trial will be held at the Criminal Appeals Court in Athens.

The suspects included businessmen, brokers and investors, who were charged with fraud and money laundering.

The suspects’ trial began on April 15 last year but numerous legal efforts had proceeded it, starting with the initial charges issued by prosecutor Dimitris Asprogerakas in 2000.

At one stage, the investigation was assigned to magistrate Constantina Bourboulia but she was then sentenced to 12 years in prison for abuse of power.
