Catering records rise after three years of fall

The Hellenic Statistical Authority’s turnover index for the accommodation and catering sector showed on Tuesday an increase in 2013 for the first time after three consecutive years of decline, posting 4.8 percent annual growth from 2012.

This is yet another indication of the reversal of the negative climate of previous years, when the index had fallen by 17.2 percent in 2012, 7.4 percent in 2011 and 8.2 percent in 2010.

The greatest rise came in the October-December 2013 period, when turnover rose by a remarkable 35.9 percent from the same period in 2012.

Besides the major increase in tourism last year, the sector appears to have benefited from the reduction of value-added tax on catering from 23 percent to 13 percent, which came into force on August 1, 2013.
