Archaeological council votes in favor of private functions at two Athenian monuments

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) on Wednesday approved the use of two Athenian monuments, the Panathenaic Stadium, known as the Kallimarmaro, and the Stoa of Attalos, for private functions.

The council is Greece’s highest advisory body on matters regarding the protection of the country’s ancient monuments, archaeological sites and sites of historical importance up to 1830.

Despite the decision reached by the council’s majority, the meeting raised a number of issues, including whether seated luncheons and dinners were appropriate events at such historical sites.

Council members noted that monuments that had been refurbished could be made available for events that ventured beyond their archaeological and sports character, as opposed to those which had retained their original structure.

While ceremonies and other events have already been organized at the Kallimarmaro and the Stoa of Attalos by the Greek state, allowing foreign companies to do the same was a different story, certain members noted, while others argued that the requests submitted for the use of both venues were high caliber proposals by institutions that had organized similar functions at several monuments in other major cities around the world.
