Greek coast guard nets large haul of contraband cigarettes
The Greek state would have missed out on as much as 2.4 million euros in taxes if a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes intercepted last week had made it onto the illegal market, authorities said on Wednesday.
Coast guard officers on Friday arrested six crew members of a ship sailing off the coast the Peloponnese which bore the name Diala and was found to be carrying a large shipment of contraband cigarettes.
Authorities later ascertained that the vessel is actually the Sao Tome-flagged Rana, which had set sail from Famagusta and was headed to Benghazi in Libya.
