Efforts renewed to pump fuel out of ship off Myconos

Crews from the Greek coast guard and the Environment Ministry are renewing their attempts to pump some 200 tons of diesel fuel out of a Turkish-flagged container ship that ran into rocks off the coast of Myconos in the Aegean Sea last week.

“Unfavorable weather has prevented the pumping of the fuel, but we are encouraged by the fact that the tanks are well insulated,” said Irene Grypari, the mayor of the popular island destination, on Friday.

Environmental authorities are concerned that strong winds and waves jostling the cargo of the Yusuf Cepnioglu, a Turkish-flagged ship owned by Furkan Denizcilik, may cause a leak.

The company has already hired a specialist company to tow the ship to safety and conduct any cleanup once the fuel is removed.
