Blue chips keep index from rising

One more day of mixed fortunes for Greek stocks left the benchmark virtually unchanged, as the gains posted by small- and mid-caps were offset by moderate losses recorded by the majority of blue chips on Thursday. This interest in the periphery points to the potential for further growth for the bourse’s main index, which came close to a three-year high this week.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,363.30 points, shedding just 0.08 percent from Wednesday’s 1,364.41 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted 0.25 percent to 439.76 points, although mid-caps expanded by 0.23 percent and small-caps added 1.07 percent.

Banks continued to climb, with Piraeus rising by 1.99 percent and National posting gains of 1.71 percent, while Hellenic Petroleum gave up 2.50 percent and Eurobank Properties declined 2.01 percent.

In total, 90 stocks enjoyed gains, 56 took losses and 15 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 81.6 million euros, down from Wednesday’s 114.3 million.
