Restoring normality

Does Greece have what it takes to become a normal European country? In fact, this should be our overall objective in the years to come.

The reforms, which will soon be put to vote in Parliament, are a step in this direction, but they need the support of political parties across the left-right spectrum.

For who is against deregulating sectors so as to bring down prices for consumers? Who is against a new system to monitor the funding of political parties and keep a check on state subsidies?

Greece’s prime minister is presented here with a big opportunity. He can address society and explain, in simple words, why these changes are not some bitter pill that has to be swallowed but measures that should have been implemented decades ago.

Whoever wants to bring the government down over a milk provision in a reform bill or because they object to improving transparency in political life will one day be held accountable before history, because their actions will have undermined the efforts and sacrifices of the Greek people in a most spectacular fashion.
