Free Wi-Fi around Greece from fall

Free Internet access will be available across Greece as of November through a network of up to 4,000 Wi-Fi points in closed and open public spaces, Transport and Networks Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said Wednesday.

A second phase, that will extend coverage more widely around the country including to universities, hospitals and public transport, is set to be completed by the end of 2014.

Several municipalities, including the City of Athens, have opted out of the project – first announced by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras during a TV interview in January – as they already provide access to alternative networks. “The fact that they did not sign up [to the project], does not mean they are not interested,” said Menelaos Daskalakis, general secretary for telecommunications.
