Inmate who murdered prison guard found dead in his cell

The Albanian inmate who murdered a prison guard at Malandrino Prison in central Greece earlier this week has been found dead in his cell.

Ilia Kareli had been moved to Nigrita jail in Serres, northern Greece, and was placed in solitary confinement. His cell was monitored via CCTV.

According to authorities, the man was seen going to sleep at 6.32 p.m. on Thursday but when guards noticed he was not moving they visited his cell. Kareli was found dead at 11.30 p.m.

A coroner is investigating the causes of the inmate’s death. He had stabbed prison guard Giorgos Tsironis to death on Tuesday after being refused leave to see his frail mother.
