Hatzis breaks A1 league points record

Nikos Hatzis became the record-holder in career points scored in the top flight leading struggling Ilisiakos to victory over Ikaros Halkidas on Saturday and rekindling its hopes for survival in the Basket League.

Evergreen Hatzis scored 19 points in the Zografou club’s 79-71 home win to reach a career total of 5,184, bettering Angelos Koronios’s record of 5,170 points. Hatzis is also the record-holder in games played in the top division.

His contribution could not have come at a better time for Ilisiakos, as the team is now engaged in a three-way tie at the bottom of the table with Ikaros and Panelefsiniakos. The Elefsina club lost 75-61 at Aris, and with three games left to play, only one of the three strugglers will get to stay up.

At the top of the table, Panathinaikos got to score more than 100 points after a long time in its 102-69 win over visiting Kolossos Rhodes on Monday, and second-placed Olympiakos had no problems at Trikala winning 84-70 on Sunday.

Panionios confirmed on Monday it will finish third after a thrilling game at Nea Smyrni with fourth-placed PAOK that was decided in overtime. Panionios won 95-92 with 20 points by Errick McCollum.

In other weekend games Apollon Patras scored a remarkable 83-81 at KAO Dramas, where Olympiakos and Panionios had lost, and Nea Kifissia sealed the fifth spot beating AGO Rethymnou 84-76.
