Union calls central Athens rally at 6 p.m., defying ban

Greece’s largest civil service umbrella union, ADEDY, on Tuesday called on all public sector workers to join an afternoon protest in central Athens against government policies, in defiance of a two-day ban on large public gatherings put in place by police during a meeting of European finance ministers in the Greek capital on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, ADEDY called on the government “to stop hiding behind the police” and said the ban is “an anti-democratic provocation.”

“It unprecedented within the European Union, as both national and European labor unions, from Brussels to every country that has ever held [the EU] presidency have organized similar protests without such a despicable measure being taken.”

The rally, should it go ahead, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Klafthmonos Square in downtown Athens.
