Nine suspected migrant traffickers arrested in Crete

Police in Crete have arrested eight Syrians and one Greek on suspicion of running a human trafficking ring.

The arrests came after authorities found 47 migrants, including 11 children, in homes near Iraklio.

According to police, the migrants had paid traffickers between 2,000 and 3,500 euros per head so they could be taken from Athens to Iraklio and then smuggled to Italy.

The suspects, aged between 28 and 45, are thought to be part of an international trafficking network.
