Security tight as German Chancellor due to arrive in Athens

Security was particularly tight in the Greek capital on Friday as German Chancellor Angela Merkel was scheduled to arrive at Athens International Airport at 2.30 p.m.

The Katechaki metro station was expected to close at 1.30 p.m. following Megaron Mousikis and Evangelismos stations which were set to close their doors starting at 1 p.m. The Syntagma and Acropolis metro stations were expected to close at 6 p.m.

Public gatherings and rallies were banned in various parts of the city center.

Merkel and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras were expected to meet at the Maximos Mansion at 5.30 p.m. before holding a joint press conference at 6.30 p.m.

The German chancellor was expected to leave Athens at around 8 p.m.
