Greece has more opportunities than difficulties, Merkel says in Athens

Greece has more opportunities than difficulties said German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her opening remarks at a meeting of Greek start-up companies during a one-day visit to Athens on Friday.

Highlighting sectors such as agriculture, tourism and services, Merkel spoke of the challenge of attracting funding and taking advantage of new technologies.

The German Chancellor said Germany and Greece were ready to contribute to the funding of small and medium-sized businesses.

On Friday, German daily Handelsblatt reported that in Athens Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras were expected to sign a memorandum of understanding for the creation of a Greek investment fund that would facilitate the operations of small and medium-sized companies through low interest rate loans.

Merkel and Samaras were expected to hold a meeting at the Maximos Mansion later in the day.

“I came to learn from you,” said Merkel. “I’m here to take a look at the future.”
